Harry Maguire is the hero as Manchester United squeeze past Leicester in FA Cup Harry Maguire: from up for sale two summers ago to redemption completed via a 93rd-minute nodded winner. If the defender was clearly offside when meeting Bruno Fernandes’s spiralling free-kick from the left he certainly did not care as here was his own tale of FA Cup romance.
A porous rearguard is one of the myriad problems that plagues United so when Patson Daka out-foxed Leny Yoro and Maguire and teed up Jordan Ayew early alarm bells clanged. The No 18’s effort was fierce and straight at André Onana and the home goalkeeper saved.
The centre-back made the admission after scoring a dramatic winner in2-1 win over Leicester City in the fourth round of the on Friday night. Maguire headed in a 93rd-minute winner to complete an unlikely comeback and secure the Reds’ place in Monday night’s fifth round draw.
“There is no doubt that I had a difficult spell. I kept my head down, I knew my chance would come and when the chance came I needed to be focused and ready to take it, and I have been given a lot of opportunities over the last 18 months.
s Bobby Reid opened the scoring three minutes shy of the half-time whistle to cap off a sluggish first half of football. Van Nistelrooy would have entered the interval as the happier of the two managers, but enjoyed the last laugh.
As alluded to, VAR was in use in the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup if the tie was played at a Premier League ground. Ahead of this season, however, the rule was changed – and Manchester United have been the latest beneficiary of said change.
Ruben Amorim admitted United were lucky. “With VAR it is not a goal and I think it’s important to have because it’s fair,” he said. And Leicester felt the scoreline was not. “That is not what the team deserves,” added Van Nistelrooy.
They will have likely feared the worst after Leicester took the lead towards the end of a largely dull first half, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid heading in after Andre Onana’s save from Wilfred Ndidi’s strike bounced up kindly for him.
He caused Leicester numerous problems with his runs and it was from his cross that the hosts got the equaliser, finding Rasmus Hojlund, whose shot was blocked but Joshua Zirkzee was on hand to sidefoot home moments after coming on.
Maguire appeared to be in an offside position when Fernandes connected with the ball, but with no VAR in action at this stage of the competition, the goal was awarded Another said: “A hard one to take, particularly given how far offside Maguire appeared to be, but we’ve competed well tonight.
An excellent Bruno Fernandes free-kick was met by the head of the onrushing centre-back to spark jubilant scenes at Old Trafford However, replays show that Maguire was in an offside position when Fernandes took the set-piece.
The Leicester boss told ITV Sport after: “We were not defeat in ‘Fergie time’, we were defeated in offside time Speaking on the lack of VAR, he added: “This wasn’t necessary. Look, VAR you have in a couple of centimetres, couple of inches “This was half a metre, clear in line. It’s a hard one to take because the team deserved the draw in the end, the extra-time to stay in the game, you never know what happens.
“Of course, we know the second half is going to bring some pressure on us and some chances but not even that much. We deserved to go into extra-time and go for the battle, and maybe penalties Van Nistelrooy returned to United for the first time since leaving as their interim head coach in November.
Their first was a 5-2 thumping win in the Carabao Cup fourth round before a 3-0 triumph in the Premier League a few days later – both matches in which Van Nistelrooy was in charge of the Red Devils Manchester United clawed back from a goal down to beat Leicester City in a 2-1 fourth-round FA Cup victory on Friday at Old Trafford, thanks to a last-gasp controversial header from veteran defender Harry Maguire plus a strike from Joshua Zirkzee.
“Look, VAR you have a couple of centimetres, couple of inches. This was half a metre clear in line. It’s a hard one to take. We deserved to go into extra time and go for the battle in extra time and maybe penalties.”
The Foxes boss, who started the season as one of Erik ten Hag’s assistants and stepped up as interim manager before being let go by Ruben Amorim, said of the goal: “That is unacceptable and unthinkable at this level. But the tepid nature of the first half leaves big questions over United’s long-term future and after the match Maguire was asked why there was “no intensity, no desire and no commitment”.
“It’s huge for us. Where we are in the Premier League is nowhere near good enough and we know we can progress in the Europa League. We want to take this competition really seriously. We’re the holders and we’ve got a big responsibility to perform in this competition and we’re looking forward to the next round now,” he said.
Why is Ruben Amorim like Erik ten Hag? Because he’s better in the cups. He now has five wins in seven cup games, plus the shoot-out triumph at Arsenal, so just the one defeat (at Spurs in the Carabao). In the league, as you know, he has lost seven out of 13. And lately, whatever the tournament, the home wins have been less than convincing – United were 1-0 down to Southampton and 1-0 down to Leicester.
Asked why United so often need this kind of late swing, he says: “Our record at Old Trafford’s been really poor. We lose that belief and it shows… Where we are in the Premier League is nowhere near good enough.”
Dorgu will be a great player for Man United..his start was good He played only 45 minutes and he got a 4 min video? Impressive debuting right away in the starting 11 in an important match, that’s heavy. but he held up well in my opinion. so he seems mentally good, confident; and that’s what man utd need. so I think he’ll do alright
people are too much yappin, remember how bad ugarte debuted Amorim should play him as a left back and bench mainoo cuz that bro isn’t good as we always hype his nonsense play Our coach playing players out of position is becoming a worry. Most of the passes from Dalot and Dorgu was to the back, they could
not drive forward with the ball, because it will be on their weaker foot, its affecting our attack. You cried for a LWB, you finally get one and you are playing him at RWB, its mind blowing. The coach is killing us
If you’ve ever played football you can see the boy has talent Dorgu played really well on his first game for Manchester united United’s best player in the first half. Excellent debut, looks to move forward – unlike most of the others To say he was playing on the right rather than the left he had a promising 45-minute debut
I’m Italian and I know this boy very well since he played for Lecce’s youth team. please don’t waste his talent! maybe one day he will be able to do what Gareth Bale did by becoming an attacking winger but now he is a fluidizing left back, he is not ready yet on the right.
